This is from an article I found on this web page, "Dua" by Huma Ahmad, and thought I'd share it with you...

We can and should make Dua in every condition, i.e. in
hardship and in prosperity. There are also some special
times to make Dua where it is more likely to be accepted:

1. When one is oppressed
2. Between the time of Athan and Iqama
3. At the time of the call for prayer
4. At the time of fighting when warriors are engaged with each other
5. When it is raining
6. When one is sick
7. The last third of the night
8. Ramadan (especially Lailatul Qadr)
9. After the Fard part of prayer
10. When traveling
11. When breaking fast
12. In Sujood
13. Fridays, some say on Friday after Asr prayer
14. While drinking the water from the well of Zamzam
15. At the start of prayer (Dua of Istiftah)
16. When one begins the prayer, i.e. with “all praise be to Allah, the Pure and the Blessed one”
17. While one recites al-Fatiha (which is a Dua)
18. When Ameen is said in the prayer (also relating to Fatiha)
19. At the time of raising the head after the Rukoo
20. In the last part of the prayer after conveying blessings unto the Prophet (SAW)
21. Before finishing the prayer (before Tasleem (saying the Salaam to the angels))
22. At the end of Wudu
23. On the day of Arafah
24. On waking up from sleep
25. At times of adversity
26. Prayer after the death of a person
27. Dua when someone’s heart is filled with sincerity and when it is focused on Allah
28. Dua of the parent against or for his children
29. When the sun moves from its meridian but before the Dhuhr prayer
30. The Dua of a Muslim for his brother without the latter’s knowledge
31. At the time the army advances to fight in the way of Allah.

Dua can be beautified and perfected by certain actions:

1. Have Wudu, face Qibla, be neat and clean
2. Raise both hands up to the shoulder with palms open facing up
3. Use words of Allah and Muhammad (SAW)- i.e. Duas found in Quran and Hadith
4. Ask by Asma alHusna- Allah’s Beautiful Names
5. Ask Allah by your good deeds
6. Be insistent-repeat (i.e. 3x’s)
7. Glorify Allah and recite Durud for the Prophet (SAW) at both the beginning and end
8. Show humility, entreaty, desire and fear while making Dua
9. Repent and try to make amends where one has wronged
10. Confess mistakes, shortcomings, and sins
11. Keep voice between a whisper and speaking aloud
12. Show the need for Allah’s help and implore Him for release from weakness, hardship and tribulation.
13. Seize the opportunity of time, situation and circumstance in which prayers are answered
14. Avoid rhymed prose to keep concentration
15. Crying when making Dua
16. The Dua of Dhun-Nun (Yunus) by which he invoked Allah from within the belly of the whale was: “LAa ilaha illa Anta, Subhanaka innee kuntu min aDH-DHaalimeen.” No Muslim ever makes Dua with it but Allah answers it.” [at tirmidhi in his sunan, ahmad and hakim reported it and hakim declared it authentic and adh dhahabee agreed]
17. End with “Alhamdulillah rabbil alameen”

I really dislike when my naps were originally supposed to be only 45 mins but end up being 3.5 hours -- like today's.

Anyway, speaking of sleep... I am reading this very informative book called "More than 1000 Sunan Every Day and Night" and one of the topics I just read was about awakening from sleep.

FACT: When awakening from sleep, it is sunnah of the Prophet PBUH to perform the following

PROOF and/or REASON:

1. Wipe the effects of sleep from the face with your hands.

Imaam an-Nawawee and Ibn Hajar stated this wiping to be desirable based on the following

When the Messenger of Allah PBUH woke up, he would sit up and rub away the effects of sleep from his face with his hand.

2. Say the du'aa for waking up: (this is the english translation)

All praise is for Allah SWT who gave us life after death (ie. sleep) and to Him is the resurrection.

3. Use a siwaak

When the Prophet PBUH woke up from the night (sleep), he used to clean his mouth with a siwaak

4. Snuff water

When one of you wakes up from sleep, then snuff water three times. [And I found the following very interesting as I did not know of this] For indeed, the Shaytaan spends the night in the upper part of his nose. !!!

5. Wash both hands three times

When one of you wakes up from sleep, he must not dip his hand into a utensil until he washes it three times...

Sunday March 18th, 2007. So the story goes: we had a bunch of dates which reminded me of Ramadan and how I used to break my fast with dates and milk, so I decided to put them on a dinner plate, take a picture and reminisce. :)
I miss how Qur'an used to be on almost every arab channel on satellite everyday for practically the whole day. I miss going to the masjid every night for taraweeh and prostrating in front of Allah (SWT), with the beautiful voice of the Imam and how he would be able to get deep into my heart with his khutbah and make my eyes fill up with tears of passion and determination.

Manana por la manana, voy a desayunar con mi amiga lucia. Algunas veces le echo de menos levantarme temprano por la manana y ahora le echo de menos. Entonces, voy a levantarme a las siete y voy a ponerme la ropa y despues voy a salir de la casa, inshallah. Ay, tengo que hacer mucha tarea esta noche antes de dormir y tambien manana por todo el dia. Tengo que hacer la composicion en espanol, estudiar para nutricion, plantas y tambien stat. Esta noche, antes de dormirme, voy a poner en mi memoria una lectura de nutricion y leer Qur'an... me encanta leerlo porque entendo mucho dos cosas: leer arabe y apprender que dice el Dios swt. Ahora son las diez por la noche y estoy escuchando musica. Hmm, pienso que voy a dormir a las doce por la mas tarde o doce y media -- voy a ver. Oh, tambien necesito hacer la tarea para mi amigo pequeno... llata, voy a hacerlas.

She would study at the library, determined to consciously know the material. She was just your typical girl who had a dream, a destination... like any other. She would stroll into class with her pretty hair done and her typical outfit: long-sleeved shirt, vest, jeans, flats and a two-shoulder backpack. She would answer different forms of the same question with a contagious, bright smile, tediously but one would think it was the first. She once made an announcement, about some sort of student group organization that she was a part of, forgetting what she said and just focusing on her strong, independent voice, I applauded when she ended. She was in a few classes of mine for the next year and there always was something noticeably unique about her. Something special. Something worthy of my curiosity. I recall seeing her randomly and wondering "could she really do it? or is it just another false prospective?"
After not seeing her for over a year, I saw her the other day while sitting with some friends and my heart was tied into a knot. I rubbed my eyes unable to believe what I just saw. "Mashallah, wow, I'm amazed." Thoughts ran, bounced and returned to my mind nearly driving me insane. My friends were talking to me and to one another but they were entirely tuned out for a couple minutes, while my mind took me on a jetplane to the real thoughts that had always been in the back of my head. I knew it was true but at the same time I couldn't believe it. She was determined, focused and now she is settled, resolved. I guess what your heart says is true but it is your mind that lies to you. I knew what I felt was true all along and she just proved it to me passively, without even knowing she did. SubhanAllah. All it took was a glance. And all I could think of how she inspired me. Her unintentional inspiration inspired me to go that extra mile and I could almost love her for that. Alhamdulillah, she has come into my path and Alhamdulillah for making her walk by the same place that I was, at that same instant and subhanAllah how I happened to look up. This must be for a reason, because everything happens for a reason.

What's Valentine's Day?

I don't believe Valentine's Day should be the only day you should express your love or surprise your significant other throughout the year, that should be everyday or at least often enough. Yeah sure maybe you got in a fight and you happen to make it up the day after, which happens to be Valentine's day, which is a valid excuse. But honestly, this is the same as Thanksgiving day... why are you going to thank Allah for his blessings one day out of the year... why not all 365.25 days?! If Valentine's day is a day for loving, caring, flowers (thanks Fatoush & Aboora for the flowers by the way :) ) then what about all the other days? Do they solely consist of not appreciating, or even acknowledging for that matter, the existence of your significant other?
Just curious.

I would rant on, but I have to go do a lovely stats assignment x2.

The Tim Hortons in ETLC rules -- those latina girls wake me up any morning when I go to buy a coffee or just walk by to have a conversation en espanol. Believe me, there ain't nothing like practicing your spanish 7:30 in the AM~

The future seems a long distance away, but truly it isn't. Wasn't it September just yesterday? Wasn't I just searching online last week for tickets to Amsterdam? Didn't I just write my Biology 201 final a month ago? Didn't I just meet Hasna 6 months ago? Didn't I just write my Physics 30 diploma last year? Didn't hanna and Uncle Hassan come to Canada just 3 years ago? Wasn't 1994 just 5 years ago?

No, September was 4 months ago. Searched for tickets 8 months ago. Wrote Biology 201 final 6 months ago. Met Hasna 6 years ago. Wrote Physics 30 diploma 3 years ago. Hanna and Uncle Hassan came over 8 years ago. And, 1994 was 13 years ago.

Opening the door, going into the bedroom I realized that the day was over. The excitement was all over, for the day at least, and I found myself awaiting the next reason to dress up. Changing into my fleece pyjamas gave me a feeling of rest and relaxation. I made wudu and prayed salat al-Ishaa, realizing it's time for bed. My eyes were red, all dried out of water and wanting to close. I listened to some Qur'an: Surat al-Kahf, al-Dukhan and a bit of Surat al-Baqarah. I couldn't think of any better way to thank him alhamdulillah for such a beautiful night with all of my loving Muslim brothers and sisters. I couldn't get over the huge turn out. Seeing all those muslims and non-muslims was extraordinary. Can't wait to see pictures from Saraa! Also, a big shout to Mariam and Saraa for their input to the Mosquers -- your videos were amazing!
Jazakum Allahu khair for supporting our muslim community at the University of Alberta and may Allah bless you all with the most beautiful of blessings. Inshallah IAW will be a huge success.
I placed my shirt on a hanger, sealed the buttons and hung it up, as well as my pants and put my shoes away; reminiscing how we went out to eat and then half of us went for coffee - we ate too much and the caffeine definitely stimulated the digestion process. Thank you ladies for contributing to the unforgettable day, without you all I think I'd lose my mind! You all know who you are.

It's Saturday morning and I have so much to do to the point where I don't even want to do any of it because it feels as if it's impossible to do them all - and it's possible, I know it's possible... it's all psychological. I have to do laundry, tidy everything up and study. Only the first two weeks have gone by and I am already behind, what a crappy feeling. Thankfully my sister has already cleaned the kitchen, vacuumed and cleaned the washrooms -- but I still have to do all the laundry and all the other chores. I just spoke to Fatoush and she is on the same boat as I am, so I feel better about it all.

Why must you always question -- sometimes the same ones-- repeatedly, tediously, over and over again? What do you want to know? Why do you want to know it? What makes you so curious about what I'm doing and why?
Are you my parents? Because I can tell you... not even my parents question me to this extent. As a good friend put it "Those who question, end up last". So YES I am doing/taking this and that, what's it to you? Do you pay for anything of mine? Are we going to be wed? Are you going to be a part of my future? Or do you just want to keep yourself informed on others', in particular myself, lives? Do you have nothing else to think/worry/talk about, or possibly even nothing else to study and just have to worry about what I AM doing? Or WHY I am doing it?

Enough is enough.

Enough curiosity, it's annoying.
Enough questions, replies are tedious.
Enough glancing, it's noticeable; and
Enough smiling, they're fake.

Let me do this and let me do that --WHATEVER-- and quit being so curious... or actually more than curious it is. You're being nosy like an animal finding a scent trail in order to sniff up the location of it's next prey. It definitely is human nature to be curious, but being this curious is not human nature. It's your nature, so stop.

Recollection I

Unfortunately, few people are aware of the existence of the Spanish Morocco. This existence is a direct result based on history more than anything else. The unique location of the city is so that it's so small that all land is regulated. Melilla is surrounded by Moroccan territory on all sides, thus everytime I wanted to go to the campo (the country side) where all the beautiful beaches are located I needed to cross the border. One can never imagine the size of the line ups on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of anxious people awaiting to cross the border to get to the 'true' rest and relaxation under the calescent sun. Yes, I definitely crave it every now and then, for those who inquire. Beaches with clear, blue water looking good enough to drink. For the most part, they usually never have medusas (jelly fish) but as late august approached, Dcharrana had some floating about - I refused to enter the water. My anxious 5-year-old little fish of a cousin, Kamal, definitely had no worries about getting stung with their transparent, gelate tentacles -- "Prefiero tomar el sol" I told him.
Just like many of the beaches on Morocco's coast, you can buy a two-way 5 minute boat ride to and from a secluded area of the beach where you, quite literally, are alone with your family. I loved that part. I thank Allah for putting the large mountains that make this area a long swimming distance away from the main beach.
In the end, he got stung 6 times. That means my family and I bursting out laughing times six. Each time he'd get stung, he ran out with his snorkling goggles on saying "hhhhhh, medusa nja'ra" (Berber (Tmazight) for: Oh, those damn jellyfish), waited ten seconds, then just dived back in as if nothing happened. He, unknowingly, is hilarious, and that's the best part.

Masha'Allah it is amazing how much strength just a few words can convey and how much difference it can make in the world if taken into serious consideration.

It changes the way one thinks about thoughts and plans on possible actions. What do I suggest? Think about your actions twice and truly see if it is absolutely necessary -- is this what Allah (swt) would be pleased with me doing? Is this what He would be pleased with watching? Is this what He would be pleased with seeing?

This works. Trust.

After not blogging for a while, I realized how much I ponder upon randomness, all of which are great thoughts and are never expressed. Lack of expression leads to a build up of thought and nothing gets out and we all know what that means. Essentially, I was expressionless -- dull, empty, vacuous, hollow, inscrutable, inane, vague... lifeless...

Yesterday Hasna, Abbeir and I just totally wasted time in SUB talking about nothing. I felt guilty about the rest and relaxation because I felt like I was supposed to be somewhere else. It was definitely a feeling I didn't want...

My mom was on the plane, off toVancouver-Frankfurt-Malaga-Melilla... I guess you can say I was upset. I think that feeling was because I terribly missed her and never said a proper 'good-bye'. Even though she's gone for "only" 18 days, it's still quite a bit. Believe me, when it comes to balancing school, extracurricular, "little mommy at home" and other suffrages one would think it's nearly impossible to keep up... well I'll just have to find out.

Your mom is so important and sometimes we take advantage of that. I hate it when I hear people say witless and ignorant things about their mothers, if I wasn't muslim I think I'd punch them in the face. They are all FOOLS I tell you... FOOLS!

I went for a walk around Beaumaris Lake today, it was sooo pretty masha' Allah!
I am such a nature nut! :p

I love watching the birds fly, ducks swimming and poking their beaks into the water in order to get the food to feed their little ducklings and of course, adorable squirrels running up the tall evergreen trees -- as if no problems existed in this world, with no worries in their lives... nothing holding them back from enjoying the beauty of nature

May I please go and swim with the fishies?

It has been my dream for as far as my train of thought could possibly travel: deep sea diving. mmmmmhm, and you know what else? Do you know what two things go together much better than peanut butter and jam do? Deep sea diving + photography :p

This just one of many of Allah's creations and, unquestionably, one of the most beautiful sites to see. Think about it. A whole new life exists kilometers below, where the pressure is unbearably high, where you would not survive without that gasp of air that we have been so spoiled with all our lives.
